The story of Tom Kartsotis
Tom Kartsotis is an American entrepreneur and investor best known for founding two major watch and lifestyle companies, Fossil and Shinola. Born in 1959, Kartsotis began his career in the watch industry in 1984 when he founded Fossil in Richardson, Texas. Under his leadership as Chairman and CEO, Fossil grew into a global accessories brand, pioneering the concept of vintage-inspired, affordable fashion watches. He remained the company’s chairman until 2010.
In 2003, Kartsotis established Bedrock Manufacturing Co., a private equity and brand development firm based in Plano, Texas. Through this platform, he sought to invest in and scale design-led consumer brands while focusing on domestic job creation.
Kartsotis’s involvement with Detroit began in 2011 when he founded Shinola. He repurposed the name of a defunct mid-20th-century shoe polish brand to launch a modern American design brand specializing in hand-assembled watches, bicycles, and leather goods. Kartsotis established the company’s headquarters and watch factory within the historic Argonaut Building in Detroit, aiming to revitalize local manufacturing. The brand’s first timepiece, The Runwell, was released in 2013 and gained significant attention for its commitment to American craftsmanship.
Beyond horology, Kartsotis has expanded his portfolio to include several other American brands. He acquired the heritage outdoor outfitter Filson and has made significant investments in companies like Steven Alan and TVG Hospitality. He has also served on the Board of Directors for Burton Snowboards since 2004. Known for shunning media attention, Kartsotis continues to focus on business models that prioritize quality design and the creation of industrial opportunities within the United States.
