The story of Juliusz Gruzewski

Juliusz Gruzewski (1808–1865) was a Polish nobleman, military officer, and entrepreneur who played a critical role in the 19th-century success of the Swiss watchmaking manufacture Czapek & Cie. Born into a prominent family, Gruzewski gained distinction as a hero of the November Uprising (1830), a Polish insurrection against the Russian Empire. Following the collapse of the uprising, he emigrated to Switzerland, where he remained politically active and eventually served as an official representative of the Polish National Government.

Gruzewski’s entry into the horological industry occurred in 1845. Following the dissolution of the partnership between Francois Czapek and Antoine Norbert de Patek (who went on to form Patek Philippe), Czapek sought a new partner to continue his manufacturing efforts. On May 1, 1845, Gruzewski and Czapek co-founded Czapek & Cie in Geneva. While Czapek provided the technical mastery as a master watchmaker and “finisseur,” Gruzewski provided the essential financial backing and strategic connections necessary to elevate the brand’s prestige.

A pivotal element of Gruzewski’s contribution to the brand was his close personal friendship with Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, who would later become Emperor Napoleon III of France. This relationship proved instrumental in securing the company’s commercial success and international reputation. Under Gruzewski’s influence, Czapek & Cie became the “Fournisseur de la cour” (Purveyor to the Court) for the French Emperor. The company supplied numerous timepieces to the imperial household, many of which were used as high-level diplomatic gifts.

During Gruzewski’s tenure as a partner, Czapek & Cie flourished, expanding its operations beyond Geneva to include a boutique on the Place Vendome in Paris (established in 1850) and another in Warsaw (established in 1854). This period is often cited as the height of the original company’s influence, characterized by the production of high-quality pocket watches that favored nobility and the European elite.

Juliusz Gruzewski remained a partner in the firm until his death in 1865. His involvement is remembered as the bridge between Czapek’s artisanal skill and the geopolitical elite of the 19th century, a legacy that modern entrepreneurs referenced when resurrecting the Czapek & Cie name in 2012. He is recognized today not only for his military and political service to Poland but as a foundational figure in the history of independent Swiss haute horlogerie.
