Antoni Norbert de Patek (1812–1877) was a Polish pioneer in watchmaking and the co-founder of the prestigious Swiss watch manufacture Patek Philippe. Born into a noble family in Piaski Szlacheckie, Poland, Patek initially pursued a military career, serving as a lieutenant in the 1st Mounted Rifles Regiment. He was a veteran of the November Uprising against Russian rule, earning the Virtuti Militari, Poland’s highest military decoration, for his bravery. Following the uprising’s failure in 1831, he emigrated to France and eventually settled in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1835.

In Geneva, Patek transitioned into the horological industry, initially by purchasing movements and overseeing their casing and finishing. In 1839, he co-founded Patek, Czapek & Co. with fellow Polish immigrant Franciszek Czapek. A significant turning point occurred in 1844 when Patek met French watchmaker Adrien Philippe at the Industrial Exposition in Paris. Impressed by Philippe’s invention of a keyless winding and setting mechanism, Patek invited him to join the firm. This partnership led to the establishment of Patek & Co. in 1845, which was later renamed Patek, Philippe & Cie in 1851.

Patek was primarily responsible for the brand’s commercial strategy and international expansion. Under his leadership, the company achieved global prestige, securing clients among European royalty, including Queen Victoria. He also established a long-standing partnership with Tiffany & Co. in the United States. Beyond his business success, Patek remained a dedicated political activist and philanthropist within the Polish diaspora. He was granted a countship by Pope Pius IX for his service to the Catholic community. Antoni Norbert de Patek died in Geneva on March 1, 1877, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and excellence that continues to define the Patek Philippe brand today.
