Shinola

Shinola is an American lifestyle brand founded in 2011 by Tom Kartsotis, a venture capitalist and co-founder of Fossil Group. Headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, the company was established with the goal of reviving large-scale American manufacturing in a city historically recognized for its industrial heritage. The brand’s name was purchased from a defunct early 20th-century shoe polish company, a choice inspired by the colloquial phrase “you don’t know s— from Shinola”.

The brand is often recognized for its commitment to local job creation and its role in Detroit’s economic revitalization. Collectors and consumers are frequently drawn to the watches for their vintage-inspired aesthetic, robust construction, and the brand’s emphasis on American craftsmanship. While the company sources components globally—including movements from Swiss partners like Ronda AG and Sellita—every watch is assembled by hand in its Detroit factory through a process involving over 30 steps.

Shinola’s horological catalog features several key collections: – The Runwell: The brand’s flagship model, known for its clean dial, “pumpkin” crown, and Argonite quartz movement.
– The Monster Series: A collection of automatic dive watches, such as the Lake Superior and Lake Michigan models, engineered for water resistance and durability.
– The Canfield: This series features a refined, top-loaded case design and includes high-end mechanical models like the Canfield Speedway chronograph.
– The Duck: A versatile and playful sport watch designed for water-resistant performance and everyday wear.
– The Guardian: Defined by a distinct rounded square case, this collection offers a unique architectural look within the brand’s lineup.
