Alfred Davis was an essential figure in the early history of the horological industry, best known as the co-founder of the company that would become Rolex SA. Often overshadowed by his partner Hans Wilsdorf, Davis provided the initial capital and business partnership necessary to launch one of the world’s most successful luxury brands.
In 1905, Davis partnered with his brother-in-law, Hans Wilsdorf, to establish the firm Wilsdorf & Davis in London. At the time, Davis was an investor who brought the necessary financing to the venture, while Wilsdorf contributed technical knowledge and a vision for the future of wristwatches. Their primary business involved importing high-quality Swiss movements from Hermann Aegler in Bienne and placing them into watch cases manufactured by English companies like Dennison. These watches were then distributed to jewelers, who often placed their own names on the dials.
The early contributions of Alfred Davis are visible in the original branding of the company’s products. During the first decade of operation, many of the timepieces produced by the firm were hallmarked with the initials W&D inside the caseback. In 1908, the partners registered the trademark Rolex, and in 1915, the company officially became the Rolex Watch Co. Ltd.
Davis remained an equal partner in the business during its formative years in England. However, the landscape of the industry shifted following World War I due to high import taxes on luxury goods and precious metals. In 1919, the decision was made to relocate the company’s operations to Geneva, Switzerland, to be closer to their movement suppliers. During this transition period, Wilsdorf bought out Davis’s share of the company, becoming the sole owner and primary driver of the brand’s global expansion.
While Alfred Davis’s direct involvement with the brand concluded after the move to Geneva, his role as a foundational partner was critical. Without his initial investment and the stability of the Wilsdorf & Davis partnership, the enterprise that eventually revolutionized the wristwatch industry might not have reached its eventual heights. Today, he is remembered as a pivotal entrepreneur whose collaboration helped lay the groundwork for a global icon of precision and luxury.
