Peter Stas

Peter Stas is a Dutch entrepreneur and author who has made a significant impact on the modern Swiss watch industry as the co-founder of the Frederique Constant Group. Born in Gouda, Netherlands, in 1963, Stas studied at Erasmus University before beginning his professional career as a Product-Marketing Manager for Royal Philips Electronics.

In 1988, Peter Stas and his wife, Aletta Stas-Bax, founded the watch brand Frederique Constant with the mission of making high-quality, Swiss-made mechanical timepieces accessible to a broader audience. This “accessible luxury” strategy became the cornerstone of the company’s success. The brand launched its first collection in 1992 and introduced the iconic “Heart Beat” design in 1994, which revealed the mechanical movement through an aperture on the dial. Under his leadership, the company transitioned into a true manufacture, developing its first in-house caliber in 2004.

Stas played a pivotal role in the revival of the historic Alpina watch brand. In 2002, he and his wife acquired Alpina, a manufacturer of Swiss sports watches founded in 1883. Stas worked to integrate Alpina into the Frederique Constant Group, leveraging the brand’s heritage in military and aviation timepieces while modernizing its offerings. He was also instrumental in the 2008 founding of Ateliers deMonaco, a high-end brand focused on complex mechanisms and haute horlogerie.

A pioneer in the intersection of traditional watchmaking and modern technology, Stas led the 2015 introduction of the “Horological Smartwatch.” This innovative design combined an analog dial with connected technology, created through a joint venture called Manufacture Modules Technologies (MMT). In 2018, he further pushed technological boundaries by revealing the world’s first mechanical smartwatch, which fused a mechanical movement with electronic smart features.

In 2016, Peter and Aletta Stas sold the Frederique Constant Group—including the Frederique Constant, Alpina, and Ateliers deMonaco brands—to the Japanese Citizen Watch Company. Stas remained as the group’s president and CEO for several years following the acquisition, ensuring the continuity of the brands’ values. Beyond his corporate leadership, Stas is an author, having co-written the book Live Your Passion in 2013, which details the history and growth of his watchmaking enterprises. He is recognized in the industry for his commitment to technical innovation and his advocacy for the independent Swiss watchmaking sector.
