Born in the 19th century, Hauser is most recognized as the founder of the Alpina watch brand and the driving force behind the creation of one of Switzerland’s most significant watchmaking cooperatives.
In 1883, Hauser established the Alpina Swiss Watchmakers Corporation, originally known as the Union Horlogere. His primary objective was to unite independent Swiss watchmakers, whom he called Alpinists, to consolidate the purchase of components and optimize manufacturing processes. By fostering cooperation between manufacturers and wholesalers, Hauser aimed to reduce costs and improve the quality of Swiss timepieces, ensuring that high-grade horology remained accessible.
Under Hauser’s leadership, the cooperative expanded rapidly. In 1890, he moved the headquarters to Biel/Bienne, a major center for Swiss watchmaking. By the early 20th century, the Union had established a network of subsidiaries across Europe, including Germany, Austria, and France. In 1901, the trademark Alpina was officially registered, initially to identify high-end calibers developed by the union’s members. By 1908, Alpina transitioned into a watch brand in its own right, with Hauser overseeing the development of in-house movements and chronometers.
Hauser’s contribution to the industry extended beyond business logistics; he was a champion of quality and reliability. He is credited with introducing the international watch guarantee, a groundbreaking statement of confidence in the durability of the brand’s products. His technical vision culminated in the Alpina 4 concept, which established four essential requirements for a true sports watch: antimagnetic properties, anti-shock technology, water resistance, and a stainless steel construction.
Throughout his career, Hauser remained dedicated to the welfare of independent watchmakers and the advancement of Swiss precision. He served as the president of various branches of the corporation, including the Geneva-based Alpina Watch Co. founded in 1911. His philosophy of combining artisanal craftsmanship with industrial efficiency allowed the Alpina brand to thrive through the golden age of mechanical watchmaking.
