Ateliers deMonaco

Ateliers deMonaco was founded in 2008 by master watchmaker Pim Koeslag, entrepreneur Robert van Pappelendam, and Peter Stas, co-founder of Frédérique Constant and Alpina. Envisioned as an independent haute horlogerie laboratory liberated from the volume demands of industrial manufacturing, the atelier spent four years developing its initial complications before officially launching in the Principality of Monaco and opening its first Monte Carlo boutique in 2009. To attain complete manufacturing autonomy and qualify for the rigorous Poinçon de Genève (Geneva Seal)—which mandates that movement assembly, finishing, and regulation occur within the Canton of Geneva—the brand relocated its workshops to Plan-les-Ouates in 2015. Operating on a strict micro-production model, the maison releases its collections in numbered runs between 8 and 88 pieces, maintaining an exclusive total output of approximately 150 watches per year.

Behind this deliberate scarcity lies an engineering portfolio spanning six proprietary in-house calibers and four registered patents. Its technical foundation centers on the patented “eXtreme Precision” Tourbillon (XPremity), which utilizes an ultra-lightweight 0.6-gram titanium and aluminum cage counterbalanced by 18K gold micro-screws, paired with a silicium escape wheel and lever for superior rate stability. This mechanical precision is reinforced by the patented Freebeat regulation system, an architecture that adjusts the active length of the hairspring without the disruptive friction typical of standard index pins, directly supporting the brand’s Geneva Seal certifications. For complex calendar displays, the manufacture engineered the EaZy Adjust perpetual calendar, enabling full bidirectional synchronization across the day, date, month, and leap-year cycles entirely via the winding crown without the need for delicate pushpins. Rounding out its mechanical portfolio is a direct-drive flyback chronograph system that resets to zero instantly, eliminating the mechanical lag common to conventional split-timing levers.

These patented mechanisms drive a distinct stable of signature timepieces, led by the Tourbillon Oculus 1297. Named after the year the House of Grimaldi took sovereign root in Monaco, this aesthetic flagship is framed in titanium, rose gold, or modern forged carbon, featuring an aperture at 6 o’clock showcasing the tourbillon beneath a sapphire bridge, complemented by a multi-layered dial with relief guilloché inspired by the lozenges of the Monegasque coat of arms. The manufacture’s high-complication pedigree is equally evident in the Tourbillon Répétition Minute Carrillon Romain, which pairs a tourbillon with a three-hammer minute repeater chiming a Do-Re-Mi sequence tuned to the bells of Roman churches. In the sport-technical segment, the Admiral Chronographe Flyback Saphir utilizes the caliber dMc-760 beneath a transparent sapphire crystal dial, laying bare its hand-chamfered bridges, perlage, and skeletonized 22K gold oscillating weight, while the Poinçon de Genève Classique serves as a pure, time-only showcase of the Freebeat-equipped caliber dMc-700 finished with traditional hand-anglage and mirror polishing.

Beyond masculine complications, Ateliers deMonaco extends its production into high jewelry and traditional decorative crafts. The feminine Ronde de Monte-Carlo “La Sirène” honors Princess Charlene of Monaco, a former Olympic swimmer, featuring a dial micro-sculpted with the petals of South Africa’s national flower, the King Protea, hand-set with brilliant-cut diamonds, rubies, or sapphires on mother-of-pearl. Alongside its core collections, the maison maintains a dedicated bespoke division led by master engraver Bernard Ditzoff, executing personalized commissions through multi-axis hand engravings, grand feu miniature enameling, and bas-relief dial sculptures depicting historic motorsport scenes, iconic architectural landmarks such as Bangkok’s Wat Arun, and bespoke ancestral coats of arms.
