The story of Lauren Ortega
Lauren Ortega is the co-founder of Lorier, an independent American watch brand based in New York City. Alongside her husband, Lorenzo Ortega, she established the company in 2017 with the goal of creating accessible, mechanical timepieces that capture the aesthetic and spirit of mid-century vintage watches.
Before entering the horological industry, Ortega worked as a teacher. Her interest in watches was influenced by her husband, though her own horological history dates back to her childhood when she received a Minnie Mouse watch designed to help children learn to tell time. This early exposure contributed to her philosophy of viewing a watch as a purposeful, everyday companion rather than a luxury status symbol.
In 2017, following a personal experience where a vintage watch failed during a family event, Lauren encouraged Lorenzo to design their own timepiece. This led to the couple investing their life savings into the brand. Ortega played a critical role in the company’s rapid development, which saw the launch of their first model, the Neptune, within nine months. Her contributions extend across the business’s operations, from design and research to overseeing quality control at manufacturing sites in Hong Kong.
Under Ortega’s co-leadership, Lorier has gained significant recognition within the watch enthusiast community for its commitment to “democratizing” well-built watches. She emphasizes principles of durability and classic design, advocating for materials like acrylic crystals that maintain a vintage feel while ensuring watches remain easy to repair and replace.
Today, Ortega continues to manage Lorier as a family-owned business, focusing on maintaining high quality standards and direct customer engagement. Her transition from education to entrepreneurship has established her as a prominent figure in the modern microbrand movement, known for blending romantic vintage inspiration with a practical, enthusiast-driven business model.
