Georges Christian was a Swiss entrepreneur and watchmaker primarily recognized as a co-founder of Oris, one of the few remaining independent Swiss watch manufacturers. His professional legacy is defined by the transformation of a defunct factory into a major industrial enterprise and the early modernization of timepieces from pocket watches to wristwatches.

In June 1904, Christian partnered with Paul Cattin in the town of Hölstein, Switzerland. The duo purchased the recently closed Lohner & Co watch factory and established Oris, named after a nearby stream. Under their leadership, the company experienced rapid growth. Within the first year, they employed 67 people, and by 1911, Oris had become the largest employer in Hölstein with over 300 workers.

Christian was instrumental in overseeing the company’s early industrial expansion. Between 1906 and 1925, Oris opened several additional factories in locations such as Holderbank, Como, Courgenay, Herbetswil, and Ziefen. This period of growth was marked by a commitment to high-quality mechanical production and social responsibility; the company built dedicated housing and apartments to attract and retain skilled watchmakers.

Technologically, Christian’s tenure saw the brand pivot toward the emerging aviation industry and the transition to wristwatches. In 1911, the company developed a pocket watch for pilots, followed by its first pilot’s wristwatch in 1917. By 1925, the brand began fitting bracelet buckles to its pocket watches at the Ziefen factory, creating fully-fledged wristwatches that reflected changing global trends following World War I.

Georges Christian died in 1927. His death marked the end of the founding era of Oris, leading to a shift in leadership where Jacques-David LeCoultre became President of the Board of Directors. Christian’s brother-in-law, Oscar Herzog, took over as General Manager in 1928, steering the company for the next 43 years. Christian is remembered as a foundational figure whose entrepreneurial vision established the logistical and technical infrastructure that allowed Oris to survive and remain a prominent name in Swiss horology.
