Lothar Schmidt is a prominent German engineer and entrepreneur who has served as the owner and managing director of Sinn Spezialuhren since 1994. Born in 1949 in Neunkirchen, Saarland, Schmidt’s professional career is defined by a focus on technical innovation and the industrial advancement of mechanical watchmaking.

Schmidt’s academic background is in engineering, which he studied in Saarbrücken after graduating from high school. He entered the watch industry in the 1970s, serving as the technical director of a case manufacturing company. In 1980, he joined IWC Schaffhausen as a freelancer and eventually became a development manager. During his tenure at IWC, he was instrumental in pioneering the use of advanced materials such as titanium, platinum, and ceramics. His work led to the development of notable timepieces, including the Porsche Design by IWC Ocean 2000 and the case for the Grande Complication. Following the German reunification, Schmidt also played a significant role in the revival of A. Lange & Sohne in Glashutte, overseeing technical production development between 1990 and 1993.

On September 1, 1994, Schmidt acquired Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren from its founder, Helmut Sinn. He renamed the company Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH and began a strategic reorganization aimed at transforming the brand from a direct-marketing pilot watch specialist into a leader in horological technology. The first watch released under his leadership, the titanium model 244, featured magnetic field protection and set a precedent for the “technically oriented DNA” that would define the brand.

Over the last three decades, Schmidt has introduced numerous proprietary technologies to improve the durability and functionality of mechanical watches. These innovations include Ar-Dehumidifying Technology to prevent fogging, Hydro technology for underwater legibility and pressure resistance, and Tegiment technology for increased case hardness. He also expanded the brand’s reach by developing the Frankfurt Financial District Watch series in 1999 and establishing a sister company, Sachsische Uhrentechnologie GmbH (SUG), in Glashutte to manufacture high-quality watch cases.

Under Schmidt’s management, Sinn has grown from a small operation with approximately a dozen employees to a company with over 160 staff members. His leadership has been characterized by a commitment to independence, resisting the consolidation trends of the luxury industry. In 2024, marking 30 years at the helm, Schmidt announced the creation of the UWE Foundation to secure the long-term future of the company and its subsidiaries. This foundation, named after his son, is intended to preserve his life’s work and maintain the brand’s commitment to engineering excellence.
