The Sinn 140 S, launched in 1985, is a manual-wind chronograph in a stainless steel case, with a black dial and a luminous display designed for legibility. It is based on the Valjoux 230 movement, and the “S” in the name refers to space, as the 140 was developed for the German Spacelab D1 mission. I could not find reliable official figures for the exact case size of the first watches, so it is not stated here.
Sinn’s founder Helmut Sinn, a pilot, built tool watches for professionals, and the 140 was supplied to German astronauts for the 1985 Spacelab flight. This made it among the first European watches linked to a crewed space mission.
Collectors respect the 140 S as a rugged, no-frills chronograph with real flight heritage. Sinn has continued to offer 140-series chronographs, including anniversary editions, but the original 1985 model is long out of production.
