Lorenzo Ortega is the co-founder and creative lead of Lorier, an independent watch brand based in New York City. Alongside his wife, Lauren Ortega, he established the company in 2017 with the goal of creating accessible, vintage-inspired timepieces that serve as everyday companions. Before entering the horological industry, Ortega worked as a teacher, a background he often cites as a major influence on his approach to learning and continuous improvement within his business.
His interest in watches began at age 15 when his father gifted him a Seiko 5. The mechanical movement visible through the display caseback sparked a lifelong fascination with horology. This passion eventually led him to explore vintage designs, specifically those from the mid-20th century. The impetus for founding Lorier came when a vintage Omega he owned failed after being exposed to water, prompting him to seek a modern timepiece that captured the same aesthetic without the fragility or high cost of a true vintage piece. Finding a gap in the market for such a watch, he and Lauren invested their personal savings to launch their own brand.
Within Lorier, Ortega focuses heavily on design and photography. He is responsible for the “neo-vintage” aesthetic that defines the brand, drawing inspiration from mid-century classics while asserting a unique identity. His design philosophy emphasizes the idea of a “one-watch collection”—a versatile, reliable timepiece intended to be worn through all of life’s experiences. He often favors acrylic crystals and mechanical movements, choices intended to evoke the romance and tactile nature of historical timepieces.
Since launching their first model, the Neptune, in 2018, Ortega has overseen the expansion of the brand to include various collections such as the Falcon, Gemini, and Hyperion. Under his co-leadership, Lorier has gained significant recognition in the enthusiast community for its commitment to high-quality specifications and transparent business practices. Outside of watchmaking, Ortega has practiced Muay Thai for many years, a discipline he utilizes to maintain focus and decompress from the demands of running an independent manufacturing company.
