Kelton

Kelton is a French watch brand founded in 1955 in Besançon, a historic center of French horology. The brand was established through a strategic partnership between the American watchmaking giant Timex (then known as United States Time Corporation) and Stéphane Boullier, a local watchmaker who also headed the Vixa brand. The collaboration aimed to bring Timex’s efficient, mass-production techniques to the European market. According to brand history, the name Kelton was derived from “The Elton,” the name of the hotel where Boullier stayed while negotiating the deal in the United States.

The brand became a cultural phenomenon in France during the 1960s and 1970s by adopting a disruptive distribution strategy. While traditional watches were sold exclusively in jewelry stores, Kelton leveraged the distribution network of its sales manager—who came from the pen company Bic—to place timepieces in tobacco shops, newsstands, and stationery stores. This accessibility, combined with the famous “Vous vous changez, changez de Kelton” (You change, change your Kelton) advertising jingle, positioned the brand as a pop-culture icon that democratized watch ownership through affordable, stylish, and reliable designs.

Enthusiasts are drawn to Kelton for its nostalgic value and its “Made in France” assembly, which continues to this day. The brand is often praised for its “Armachoc” shock-resistance technology and its ability to produce mechanical and automatic watches at accessible price points. Owners frequently cite the brand’s robustness and its playful, retro-inspired aesthetic as primary reasons for their appeal.

Key pieces in Kelton’s catalog include the 1955 Heritage line, which pays tribute to the brand’s founding year with classic diving and dress designs. The RC and RC2 collections offer a sporty, racing-inspired aesthetic that honors the brand’s history with 1970s Formula 1 ambassadors like Emerson Fittipaldi. The Colorama series remains a signature offering, characterized by its vibrant, modular designs and bold use of color. Additionally, the military-style Camper and the vintage-inspired Villa collection reflect the brand’s diverse historical archive, which ranges from simple quartz models to more complex automatic timepieces.
