Elshan Tang

Elshan Tang is a Singaporean entrepreneur and the founder of Zelos Watches, a prominent microbrand in the horological industry. Born and raised in Singapore, Tang developed a fascination with mechanical watches and kinetic mechanisms at a young age, beginning his personal collection with Seiko timepieces when he was 15. This interest persisted through his academic years, during which he attended the National University of Singapore. While studying for his degree in Mechanical Engineering, Tang operated a side business buying, selling, and trading pre-owned Swiss luxury watches.

Upon graduating in 2013, Tang transitioned from trading established brands to designing his own timepieces. Driven by a desire to offer original designs and high-quality materials at more accessible price points, he founded Zelos in 2014. The brand name was inspired by the Greek deity of zeal and passion, reflecting Tang’s personal approach to watchmaking. He launched his first model, the Helmsman, via a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, which successfully reached its funding goal within four days.

Under Tang’s leadership, Zelos has gained international recognition for its use of unconventional and exotic materials. Tang has pioneered the use of 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite fragments, decommissioned submarine steel, tantalum, and Timascus (a titanium-damascus alloy) in his watch collections. His design philosophy emphasizes “neo-vintage” aesthetics combined with modern functionality, and he remains the sole designer for every watch in the Zelos catalog.

Despite the brand’s global reach and production of nearly 10,000 watches annually, Tang continues to operate Zelos as a lean, self-funded enterprise. Based in Singapore, he serves as the company’s sole full-time employee, overseeing everything from initial design and material sourcing to logistics and customer service. His business model often utilizes limited edition releases to maintain exclusivity and manage capital costs. Through his work with Zelos, Elshan Tang has become a central figure in the modern microbrand movement, demonstrating how independent founders can influence the global horological market through innovation and specialized craftsmanship.
