The story of Mireille Grebler
Mireille Grebler was a pioneering figure in the Swiss watchmaking industry, recognized as one of the first women in the world to lead a horological brand. Born into a Polish family, she settled in the watchmaking hub of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, after her family fled Poland at the start of World War I. This relocation immersed her in the region’s deep horological traditions, providing the foundation for her future career.
In 1927, Mireille co-founded the Cauny watch brand alongside her brothers, Albert and Henry Grebler. While her brothers traveled to international port cities like Tangier and Barcelona to establish a global distribution network, Mireille remained in Switzerland to manage the company’s operations. Her leadership was instrumental during the brand’s “golden age” from the 1950s through the 1970s. Under her direction, Cauny established a reputation for combining refined, elegant designs with reliable Swiss movements at accessible price points.
During her tenure, the brand became a household name in Southern Europe, particularly in Spain and Portugal, where owning a Cauny watch became a cultural rite of passage. Mireille was responsible for key strategic decisions, including the registration of the “Cauny Prima” trademark in 1953, which became the company’s premier collection. Her management saw the company listed under various names, including “M. Grebler” and “Cauny Watch, Mireille Grebler.”
Mireille Grebler’s legacy is defined by her role as a female trailblazer in a traditionally male-dominated industry. She successfully navigated the company through decades of growth before eventually selling the brand to a Dutch group following the onset of the quartz crisis. Today, she is remembered as a visionary entrepreneur whose leadership helped shape Cauny into a lasting symbol of mid-century Swiss horology.
