Georges Ducommun (1868–1936) was a prominent Swiss watchmaker and entrepreneur best known as the founder of the Doxa watch brand. Born into a large, modest family in Le Locle, Switzerland, Ducommun began his career in horology at the age of 12 as an apprentice to a manufacturer specializing in casing watch movements. By age 20, he had established his own watch repair business, demonstrating an early commitment to the craft by personally delivering his products to clients in neighboring towns, often on foot.

In 1889, at age 21, Ducommun founded his own watchmaking company, Fabriques Doxa, in Le Locle. The name Doxa was derived from the Greek word for glory. Under his leadership, the company quickly earned a reputation for precision and innovation. His craftsmanship received international recognition early on, notably winning a gold medal for an anti-magnetic timepiece at the 1906 World’s Fair in Milan.

One of Ducommun’s most significant technical contributions was the development and patenting of the 8-Day Doxa Caliber in 1907. This watch movement, which could run for eight consecutive days on a single wind, became a critical instrument for the burgeoning automotive and aviation industries. It was famously adopted by Bugatti for use in its racing cars, including the Type 35, and was also utilized in dashboard clocks for Mercedes-Benz and Peugeot, as well as in ships and airplanes.

Ducommun’s success as a manufacturer allowed him to become a notable figure in his community. In 1912, he purchased the Château des Monts in Le Locle, where he resided and which today serves as a renowned horological museum. He was also an early automobile enthusiast, an interest that directly influenced his company’s focus on sporting and professional-grade timepieces.

Following his death in 1936, leadership of the company passed to his son-in-law, Jacques Nardin, the grandson of Ulysse Nardin. Georges Ducommun’s legacy is defined by his transition from a young apprentice to the head of a globally recognized manufacture, establishing the foundational principles of quality and utility that would later allow Doxa to become a pioneer in specialized fields such as professional diving.
