Henry Grebler

Henry Grebler was a Polish-born entrepreneur who played a key role in the establishment and international expansion of the Swiss watch brand Cauny. Born into a Polish family, Grebler was forced to flee his home country with his siblings, Albert and Mireille, at the onset of World War I. The family eventually settled in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, a world-renowned center for horology. This relocation provided the Grebler siblings with direct exposure to the Swiss watchmaking industry and its long-standing traditions.

In 1927, Henry co-founded the Cauny watch brand alongside Albert and Mireille. The company began its operations in the Avenue Leopold-Robert, an iconic location in La Chaux-de-Fonds. While their sister Mireille remained in Switzerland to manage the company’s leadership—becoming one of the first women to head a watch brand—Henry and Albert took on the responsibility of establishing the brand’s presence in foreign markets.

Henry Grebler is often associated with the “nautical spirit” of the brand’s early years. He and his brother Albert traveled extensively on passenger ships across the Mediterranean, moving between various port cities to introduce and distribute Cauny watches. This strategy was highly successful in establishing Cauny as a prominent brand in Mediterranean Europe, particularly in Spain and Portugal, where it eventually achieved cult status.

Under the collective vision of the Grebler siblings, Cauny focused on producing high-quality timepieces with elegant designs at accessible price points. Henry’s efforts in international distribution helped the brand become a household name for millions of consumers during the mid-20th century. His work laid the foundation for a legacy of affordable Swiss watchmaking that allowed the brand to survive through various industry shifts.

Henry Grebler’s life and career reflect the entrepreneurial drive of the early 20th-century watch industry. By leveraging the technical expertise of La Chaux-de-Fonds and combining it with a Mediterranean commercial strategy, he helped transform a family start-up into an internationally recognized horological house. His contributions remain a central part of the Cauny brand’s history as it continues to operate today.
