The story of Jacques Müller
Jacques Muller is a prominent Swiss watch engineer whose career is most notably defined by his role as one of the primary creators of the Swatch watch. Working within the technical environment of ETA SA, a major Swiss movement manufacturer, Muller was instrumental in developing the industrial and technical innovations that allowed the Swiss watch industry to successfully respond to the “quartz crisis” of the 1970s and 1980s.
In the early 1980s, under the leadership of ETA CEO Ernst Thomke, Muller collaborated with fellow engineer Elmar Mock to design a new type of quartz timepiece. Their objective was to create a high-quality, low-cost watch that could be mass-produced to compete with inexpensive imports from Japan. Muller’s technical contributions were centered on a radical simplification of watch architecture. He was a key figure in developing the “Revolution 51” concept, which reduced the number of movement components from the typical 91 or more down to just 51.
One of Muller’s most significant engineering achievements was the development of a design where the watch case itself served as the base plate for the movement. This “monocoque” construction, combined with the use of synthetic materials and ultrasonic welding, eliminated many traditional assembly steps and allowed for production by industrial robots. This technical paradigm shift was essential for achieving the affordability and slim profile that characterized the first Swatch collection launched in 1983.
Muller’s expertise is documented in several foundational patents related to the Swatch design, specifically regarding the ultrasonic fastening of the watch glass and the water-resistant battery compartment. For his pioneering work in horological industrialization and design, Jacques Muller, alongside Elmar Mock, was honored with the prestigious Prix Gaia in the Craftsmanship-Creation category.
Throughout his professional life, Muller remained a dedicated engineer focused on reliability and manufacturing efficiency. While often overshadowed in popular media by the marketing and corporate leadership of the era, his technical vision provided the essential foundation for the Swatch brand’s global success. His work is recognized by historians and industry experts as a vital contribution to the revitalization of the Swiss watchmaking sector, proving that traditional Swiss precision could be successfully adapted to modern, large-scale industrial production.
