Christophe Hoppe is a French-Swiss entrepreneur and watchmaker who gained prominence as the founder of Bausele, the first Australian watch brand to be featured at Baselworld. Born in the Alsace region near the French-Swiss border, Hoppe grew up in an environment deeply connected to the horological traditions of Basel. This early proximity to the industry influenced his future career path, leading him to hold several senior roles within the Swiss watchmaking sector.
Hoppe’s professional background is rooted in finance and operations within major horological groups. He served as the Chief Financial Officer for TechnoMarine in Geneva, a brand known for its unconventional design and material combinations. He later transitioned to the Swatch Group, where he worked as the CFO for Universo, a specialist manufacturer of watch hands. These roles provided him with extensive experience in movement technology, component sourcing, and the global watch market.
In 2010, Hoppe relocated to Sydney, Australia, to be with his wife. Upon identifying a lack of premium local watch brands, he sought to create a company that combined Swiss technical precision with Australian cultural identity. In 2011, he launched Bausele, an acronym for “Beyond Australian Elements.” The brand’s defining feature is the inclusion of a physical fragment of Australia—such as beach sand, outback red earth, or coal—sealed within a transparent crown capsule.
Under Hoppe’s leadership, Bausele has expanded from a boutique startup into a recognized international brand. He has spearheaded several high-profile collaborations, including partnerships with the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). For the RAAF Centenary, Hoppe designed timepieces that incorporated decommissioned material from an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet. He also focused on technical innovation by collaborating with Flinders University to develop “Bauselite,” a proprietary lightweight ceramic-steel composite.
Hoppe remains the creative lead of Bausele, overseeing design and strategy from the brand’s headquarters in Sydney. His work is characterized by a “sport-chic” aesthetic, emphasizing water resistance and durability suited for an active lifestyle. Through his dual heritage, Hoppe has established a unique position in the industry, bridging the gap between traditional Swiss manufacturing and contemporary Australian design.
