The story of Elmar Mock
Elmar Mock is a prominent Swiss watch engineer, industrial designer, and entrepreneur, best known as the co-inventor of the Swatch. Born on February 2, 1954, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Mock’s early life was marked by a struggle with dyslexia, which he credits with shaping his unconventional and creative approach to problem-solving. Despite these academic challenges, he graduated from the Technical School of Biel in 1976 and later specialized in plastics technology and polymers.
Mock began his professional career at ETA Manufacture Horlogère, a subsidiary of what would become the Swatch Group. In 1980, while the Swiss watch industry was facing a severe crisis due to the rise of affordable Japanese quartz watches, Mock partnered with watchmaker Jacques Müller under the direction of CEO Ernst Thomke. Together, they developed a revolutionary manufacturing concept that used plastic materials and an innovative ultrasonic welding technique to attach the crystal to the watchcase. This design significantly reduced the number of components from the traditional 91 to just 51, dramatically lowering production costs and resulting in the global success of the Swatch.
Following his success at ETA, Mock contributed to other horological projects, such as the Tissot RockWatch, before transitioning into broader fields of innovation. In 1986, he founded Creaholic, a professional think-tank and innovation consulting agency based in Biel. Under his leadership, the company has completed hundreds of projects and generated over 180 patent families across various sectors, including automotive, medical, and consumer products. His work often focuses on sustainable and disruptive technologies, leading to several successful spin-off companies.
Throughout his career, Mock has been recognized as a “veteran of Swiss innovation.” He has received numerous accolades, including a nomination for the European Inventor Award for Lifetime Achievement from the European Patent Office in 2017. He is also the co-author of “The Innovation Factory,” a book that details his methodology for creative design and industrial innovation. Today, Mock continues to be a respected figure in the global engineering community, advocating for continuous experimentation and the importance of collaborative creativity.
