The story of Toby Sutton

Toby Sutton is a prominent British vintage watch specialist and entrepreneur whose career is defined by his expertise in horological history and his role in the modern revival of the Dennison watch brand. Born into a family with deep ties to the watch industry, Sutton is the son of Simon Sutton, a respected vintage watch expert. Together, they operate the London-based auction house Watches of Knightsbridge, where Toby developed a profound understanding of the “name behind the name” of historic timepieces.

Sutton’s professional interest in the Dennison brand began in 2010. While researching vintage Rolex and Omega watches, he frequently encountered the Dennison name stamped inside the cases. Discovering that Dennison was once one of the world’s largest case manufacturers before closing in 1967, Sutton was inspired to preserve its legacy. At the age of 21, he officially registered the Dennison trademark, driven by a vision to return the historic name to the forefront of the horological world.

His initial attempt to revive the brand occurred around 2016 with the release of the DENCO53. This model paid homage to the brand’s history, specifically referencing the Dennison-cased Smiths watch worn by Sir Edmund Hillary during the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953. While the project demonstrated Sutton’s commitment to British manufacturing and historical accuracy, it also provided critical market insights regarding the challenges of high-cost domestic production.

In 2024, Sutton led a successful and widely recognized relaunch of Dennison from Geneva, collaborating with entrepreneur Stéphane Cheikh and world-renowned watch designer Emmanuel Gueit. Under this new leadership, Sutton transitioned the brand from a case supplier to a complete watch manufacturer. The debut A.L.D. Collection—named after the original founder, Aaron Lufkin Dennison—features distinctive “television screen” cushion cases and semi-precious stone dials.

Today, Toby Sutton continues to serve as a director and owner of the brand, balancing his duties at Watches of Knightsbridge with his leadership at Dennison. His approach is characterized by a “democratization” of luxury design, focusing on high-quality aesthetics and historical storytelling at accessible price points. Through his efforts, Sutton has successfully bridged the gap between Dennison’s 19th-century origins and the modern enthusiast market, ensuring the brand’s continued relevance in the 21st century.
