Sugiharto Kusumadi is a prominent Singaporean entrepreneur and a central figure in the Southeast Asian horological industry, recognized for his contributions to the development and promotion of independent watch brands. With a professional background rooted in the retail and distribution sectors, Kusumadi has built a career centered on introducing niche, high-quality timepieces to a broader market, often focusing on brands that prioritize design and storytelling over traditional legacy.
In 2004, Kusumadi established Red Army Watches (RAW), a retail concept designed to provide a platform for independent and under-represented watchmakers. Under his leadership, the company expanded its presence in Singapore, operating boutiques in major shopping centers like Suntec City and Ion Orchard. His approach to retail emphasized the role of the “passionate storyteller,” aiming to broaden the options available to enthusiasts by representing brands with unique creative identities that lacked mainstream awareness.
Kusumadi’s involvement in the industry extended into brand creation in 2021 when he co-founded Horizon Watches alongside Ukrainian industrial designer Fred Bekher. The brand serves as a collaborative vehicle for Bekher’s design vision and Kusumadi’s entrepreneurial experience. Horizon Watches is characterized by its “neo-vintage” aesthetic and functional specifications, with collections such as the Nautilus and the Pilgrim drawing heavy inspiration from the maritime adventures of Jules Verne. In 2022, he co-launched Spring Sprang Sprung, Singapore’s first watch fair dedicated exclusively to micro-brands.
