The story of Marvin Menke
Marvin Menke is a New York-based designer and entrepreneur known for founding Hemel, an independent watch brand established in 2012. Raised in a bilingual Dutch and English household, Menke’s professional background is rooted in the creative arts, having earned degrees in advertising and package design from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). His early career included a tenure at Swatch during his studies, which fostered an appreciation for branding and the technical aspects of product development.
Before transitioning into horology, Menke spent years as a multi-disciplinary creative specializing in branding, photography, and packaging. He originally established Hemel as a design consultancy, and the idea for a watch brand began as a personal project. Menke intended to design a unique timepiece to serve as a high-quality gift for his clients and a showcase for his design portfolio. However, after sharing his concepts with colleagues and engaging with the online watch community, he was encouraged to bring the watches to a wider market.
Menke launched Hemel through a successful crowdfunding campaign, utilizing his skills in digital marketing and product development to maintain low overhead costs. He chose the name Hemel, the Dutch word for sky, to reflect the brand’s primary focus on aviation and military-inspired timepieces. His design philosophy centers on “practical luxury,” blending vintage aesthetics with modern specifications such as mechanical movements, sapphire crystals, and surgical-grade steel at an accessible price point.
In addition to his role as Creative Director of Hemel, Menke is an active figure in the microbrand watch community. He curates online enthusiast groups and has collaborated with other industry names, such as Mathey-Tissot and the United States Air Force, for special editions and licensed releases. Under his leadership, Hemel has grown from a boutique personal project into a recognized name in the independent watch scene, characterized by a commitment to storytelling and traditional watchmaking heritage.
