Jean-Claude Biver

Jean-Claude Biver is a prominent Swiss watchmaking executive and entrepreneur, widely recognized for his transformative influence on the modern horological industry. Born on September 20, 1949, in Luxembourg City, Biver moved to Switzerland at age ten. He pursued studies in business and economics at HEC Lausanne, graduating in 1975. His entry into the watch industry began that same year at Audemars Piguet, where he underwent a year of immersive training across all aspects of the business, eventually becoming the European Sales Manager.

In 1979, Biver joined Omega as the product manager for gold watches, gaining experience within a large international brand during the height of the quartz crisis. However, his most defining career move occurred in 1981 when he and Jacques Piguet purchased the rights to the dormant Blancpain brand for 22,000 Swiss francs. At a time when the industry was shifting toward battery-powered timepieces, Biver famously positioned Blancpain as a defender of traditional mechanical watchmaking with the slogan: Since 1735 there has never been a quartz Blancpain watch. And there never will be. Under his leadership, the company was rebuilt from the ground up, reaching a turnover of 50 million Swiss francs before being sold to the SMH Group (now Swatch Group) in 1992 for 60 million Swiss francs.

Following the sale, Biver joined the management team of the Swatch Group, where he oversaw the marketing and product development of Omega. His strategies, which included high-profile celebrity ambassadors and a partnership with the James Bond film franchise, significantly increased the brand’s global turnover. In 2004, after a brief period of retirement, Biver took the helm at Hublot as CEO and minority shareholder. He introduced the “Art of Fusion” concept, leading to the 2005 launch of the Big Bang chronograph, which became an immediate commercial success and led to the brand’s acquisition by LVMH in 2008.

Biver’s role expanded within LVMH as he became the president of its watchmaking division, overseeing brands including TAG Heuer and Zenith. During this tenure, he spearheaded the introduction of the TAG Heuer Connected smartwatch and the technical upgrading of the Zenith El Primero movement. In 2018, citing health reasons, Biver stepped down from his operational roles to become the non-executive chairman of LVMH’s watch division. In 2023, he launched a new independent venture with his son, Pierre, called Maison Biver, continuing his long-standing career as a visionary leader in haute horlogerie. Beyond watchmaking, Biver is also known as a passionate artisanal cheesemaker, producing limited quantities of alpine cheese each year.
