Jacques Piguet is a prominent Swiss businessman and horological figure best known for his pivotal role in the modern revival of the Blancpain watch brand. As the son of Frederic Piguet, the leader of the esteemed movement manufacturer of the same name, Jacques was born into a family with deep roots in the watchmaking traditions of the Vallee de Joux. His professional journey is defined by his strategic foresight during the “quartz crisis,” a period that saw the decline of many traditional mechanical watchmakers.
In 1982, Jacques Piguet, along with business partner Jean-Claude Biver, purchased the rights to the dormant Blancpain brand from the SSIH group for approximately 22,000 Swiss francs. This acquisition was foundational to the brand’s second life. Piguet and Biver repositioned Blancpain as a manufacturer of high-end mechanical timepieces, famously adopting the slogan that the brand had never produced a quartz watch and never would. Under Piguet’s co-leadership, Blancpain became a symbol of the renaissance of mechanical watchmaking, focusing on high complications and traditional craftsmanship.
During this era, Piguet ensured a close technical synergy between Blancpain and his family’s company, Frederic Piguet S.A. This partnership allowed Blancpain to utilize exclusive, high-quality movements, which helped the brand re-establish its prestige in the luxury market. The manufacture was relocated to Le Brassus, further solidifying its connection to the heritage of the Joux Valley.
In 1992, after successfully rebuilding Blancpain into a profitable and internationally recognized marque, Jacques Piguet and Jean-Claude Biver sold the company, along with Frederic Piguet S.A., to the SMH (now the Swatch Group) for 60 million Swiss francs. Following the sale, Piguet remained involved in the industry for a period, eventually seeing the official merger of Frederic Piguet into the Blancpain manufacture in 2010.
