The story of Andrew Perez
Andrew Perez is a Chicago-based entrepreneur and designer prominently known as the founder of the independent watch brand Astor + Banks and the co-founder of Sō Labs. His entry into the horological world was driven by a lifelong interest in timepieces, which began in childhood when his father introduced him to a Timex Indiglo. This passion was further solidified during his military service in Germany, where he purchased his first personal watch.
In 2012, Perez established Astor + Banks in Chicago. The brand focuses on creating mechanical and quartz timepieces that emphasize durability, reliability, and clean design. Under his leadership, the company has gained a reputation for its “tool watch” aesthetic and its commitment to assembling watches locally in Chicago using high-quality materials and Swiss or Japanese movements. Notable releases under the Astor + Banks label include the Sea Ranger and the Fortitude collections.
In addition to his work with Astor + Banks, Perez co-founded Sō Labs (stylized as Sō Labs), a creative studio and watch brand that takes a more experimental and design-forward approach to timekeeping. Unlike the more traditional utility-focused designs of Astor + Banks, Sō Labs is characterized by its bold use of color, transparency, and geometric shapes, often drawing inspiration from 1990s aesthetics and contemporary art.
Throughout his career, Perez has been an active figure in the microbrand community, participating in independent watch shows like Intersect and collaborating with other creative agencies. His professional philosophy centers on transparency, maintaining approachable price points for enthusiasts, and merging personal passion with technical precision. Today, he continues to oversee the development of both brands from his base in Chicago, contributing to the growing landscape of American independent watchmaking.
