About this watch

The Zenith Defy Lab, presented in 2017, is a limited-edition watch built around a new regulating organ, the Zenith Oscillator. It has a titanium case of 44 mm, and the oscillator is a single-piece monolithic silicon part that replaces the traditional balance wheel, hairspring and other components. It beats at 15 Hz, or 108,000 vibrations per hour, and the watch uses the hand-wound calibre ZO 342 B.

The aim was to create a watch that was far more precise and less sensitive to shocks and magnetic fields than a conventional movement, and the single-piece design removes the need for lubrication and for many adjustments. The Defy Lab was produced in a very small run, reported as 10 pieces.

The watch was widely covered as one of the most important technical advances in mechanical watchmaking of the decade, though it remained a lab-style showpiece. The Defy Lab is no longer in production, while Zenith later brought the oscillator to the Defy Classic and other models.
