About this watch

The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 Carbon, reference T137.907.97.201.00, is a forged carbon version of the PRX, a collection Tissot created as a tribute to its original 1978 integrated-bracelet design. The case measures 40.5mm wide, 40mm long and 11.23mm thick and combines forged carbon with 316L stainless steel; the nature of the material means the pattern on each piece is unique. The black carbon dial uses index markers, and the hands carry Super-LumiNova. A sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on its underside covers the dial. Inside is the Swiss-made Powermatic 80 automatic movement with a patented silicon balance spring, running at 3Hz with up to 80 hours of power reserve. Water resistance is 10 bar, or 100 metres.

The watch shows hours, minutes and seconds along with a date display, and a see-through caseback reveals the automatic movement. The silicon balance spring is intended to improve resistance to the magnetic fields produced by everyday electronic devices. In place of the steel bracelet used on many PRX models, this reference comes on a black fluorocarbon rubber strap with a standard buckle and an interchangeable quick-release system. Tissot advises using only the original strap, as other PRX 40 straps are not suitable for this case. The complete watch weighs 75 grams, which makes it noticeably light for its size. Tissot‘s official US price is $1,150, with a two-year warranty.

Reviewers have generally welcomed the forged carbon PRX, praising the way the carbon dial continues the look of the case and gives the watch the feel of a more expensive, exotic piece. Its low weight on the wrist is another frequently noted strength, and aBlogtoWatch observed that it undercut many other forged carbon watches on price. The most common criticism concerns legibility: the lume on the hands and markers is weak, and readability varies considerably with ambient light. Fratello also found the quick-release strap tabs difficult to reach, and several reviewers pointed out the premium over steel PRX Powermatic 80 models. The PRX Powermatic 80 Carbon is currently in production and available to order from Tissot‘s official website.
