About this watch

The Frederique Constant Classics Index Automatic FC-303NB5B6 is a Swiss-made dress watch from the brand’s Classics collection. Its round stainless steel case measures 40 mm in diameter and 10.3 mm in thickness, with a 20 mm lug width. The black dial has a matt finish with applied indexes, luminous hands and luminous markers, and it is protected by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal. It is powered by the automatic FC-303 caliber, which is based on the Sellita SW200. The caliber runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour with 26 jewels and provides a 38-hour power reserve. Water resistance is rated at 5 ATM, or 50 meters, which the brand’s US site classifies as suitable for still-water swimming.

The watch displays hours, minutes and central seconds, with a date window at 3 o’clock. It comes on a black calf leather strap with a nubuck finish and crocodile pattern, which narrows from 20 mm at the lugs to an 18 mm pin buckle. Frederique Constant sells compatible 20 mm straps as accessories, so the look is easy to change. The official product photos show a solid steel caseback engraved with the Classics name, the 5 ATM rating and the sapphire crystal, rather than a display back. The same model is also offered with white or blue dials and on a steel bracelet. The US list price is USD 1,495, and the Swiss price is CHF 1,150.

Reviewers generally regard the Classics Index Automatic as an approachable entry point to Swiss mechanical watches. Monochrome called its price “rather pleasant” for a Swiss watch from an established brand and described it as a “care-free all-rounder” with a sleek, restrained dial and comfortable short lugs. Earlier reviews of the line praised its slim profile under a shirt cuff. The most common criticism is the outsourced Sellita-based movement, which is used in place of one of Frederique Constant’s in-house calibers to keep the price down. Some purists also see the date window as a compromise on a dress watch. Buyers expecting an exhibition caseback should note that the current generation has a closed back. The FC-303NB5B6 is currently in production and available from the brand’s official online stores.
