About this watch

The Bulova Lunar Pilot is a manual-wind chronograph from around 1970, reference 88510/01. It has a stainless steel case of about 45 mm, a tachymeter bezel, a black dial with white sub-dials and an acrylic crystal. It uses the Bulova calibre 11 ACACH manual-wind chronograph movement and a steel bracelet.

It is famous because Commander David Scott wore it on the Moon during Apollo 15 in 1971. NASA had issued Omega Speedmasters, but Scott’s Speedmaster crystal popped off during the mission, so he wore his personal Bulova on the lunar surface. It sold at auction in 2015 for about 1.6 million dollars.

The community values it chiefly for that story, as the best-known challenger to the Speedmaster’s Moon claim, and Bulova’s modern Lunar Pilot reissues have been popular. The original 1970 model is long out of production, though Bulova still sells the Lunar Pilot as a reissue.
