About this watch

The Breitling Chrono-Matic was launched in 1969 around the Calibre 11 automatic chronograph movement. Dealer and auction listings record it under several references, including 2110, 2111 and 2112; this page uses 2111, which is listed as a 38 mm stainless steel watch with a black dial. The cushion-shaped steel case has a screw-down back and the crown on the left. Typical dials carry a tachymeter and pulsation scale and a date window at 6 o’clock. The Calibre 11 is a 17-jewel modular chronograph built on a micro-rotor base, beating at 19,800 vibrations per hour with about 42 hours of power reserve. It matters as one of the first automatic chronographs.

The movement came from a joint venture between Breitling, Heuer, Buren and Dubois-Depraz, known as Project 99. It used Buren’s micro-rotor Intramatic base with a Dubois-Depraz chronograph module on the back, and was announced on 3 March 1969. Its left-hand crown and right-hand pushers became the layout of a family of self-winding chronographs. Breitling used the movement in the Chronomatic, the Navitimer Chrono-Matic and the Chronomat, and the later Navitimer Chrono-Matic ref. 1806 ran at 19,800 vph. A revised Calibre 12 ran at 21,600 vph.

Fratello treats the Calibre 11 as the first automatic chronograph movement sold worldwide, while others point to the Zenith El Primero and the Seiko 6139, so the “first” claim is still debated among collectors. The Chrono-Matic is regarded as a characterful late-1960s chronograph that trades at modest prices compared with other vintage chronographs. The original Chrono-Matic is no longer produced; Breitling‘s current Chronomat collection continues the name.
