About this watch

The A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1, presented in 1994, is the watch that relaunched the Saxon manufacture after the German reunification. It has a case of about 38.5 mm in gold or platinum, an off-centre dial with an outsize date at the top right, a separate small-seconds dial, and a power-reserve indicator. It runs the hand-wound calibre L901.0, with a three-quarter plate in untreated German silver and a power reserve of about 72 hours. The first reference was 101.021.

The brand was refounded by Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein, and the Lange 1 was one of four watches shown at the launch in Dresden in October 1994. Its asymmetric layout, with the hour and minute dial pushed to the left, broke with the symmetry of Swiss dress watches.

Collectors treat the 1994 Lange 1 as one of the defining modern luxury watches, and early examples are sought after. The original was updated in 2015 with a new calibre, and the Lange 1 remains the brand’s best-known watch, so the line is still in production although the first-generation watch is not.
