The A. Lange & Söhne 1815, introduced in 1995, is a hand-wound dress watch named after the year Ferdinand Adolph Lange was born. In its first generation it is a round case of about 36 mm in gold or platinum, with a silver dial, Arabic numerals, blued hands, a railway-style minute track and a small seconds dial at six o’clock. I did not find reliable official figures for every first-generation reference, so only the main points are given.
The 1815 was the classical counterpart to the Lange 1, with a symmetrical layout and a traditional three-quarter plate movement. It was the line on which Lange built its family of simple and complicated “1815” watches, including the chronograph and the Up/Down.
Collectors see the first-generation 1815 as an understated and well-finished watch that is often overlooked next to the Lange 1. The original generation has been replaced by new versions, and the 1815 line remains in the Lange catalogue.
