Yukio Kashio

Yukio Kashio was a Japanese engineer and executive who played a foundational role in the development and global success of Casio Computer Co., Ltd. Born in Tokyo on November 29, 1930, he was the youngest of the four Kashio brothers who established the company. His technical expertise and focus on production technology were essential in transitioning his brothers’ inventions into mass-market products.

After graduating from Nihon University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, Kashio gained early professional experience at Japan Steel Works before joining his brothers at Kashio Seisakujo in 1952. While his older brother Toshio focused on invention and conceptual design, Yukio was responsible for the manufacturing backbone of the enterprise. He became adept at interpreting Toshio’s complex blueprints and developing the mechanical structures and automated production lines necessary for commercialization.

Kashio is particularly recognized for his contributions to the calculator industry. He led the technical improvements for the 14-A, the world’s first compact all-electric calculator, where he developed a double-contact method to solve reliability issues with relay components. Perhaps his most significant achievement was the development of the Casio Mini in 1972. To achieve a portable and affordable design, he engineered a plate-spring keyboard that significantly reduced the device’s thickness and cost, helping to create the personal calculator market.

Within the corporate structure of Casio Computer Co., Ltd., which was formally established in 1957, Yukio served in several high-level leadership positions. He became the head of the production headquarters in 1965 and later served as Managing Director and Senior Managing Director. In 1991, he was appointed Executive Vice President, supporting his brother Kazuo in navigating the brand through intense international competition.

His influence extended to the watch division, where he supported the company’s expansion into digital horology following the 1974 release of the Casiotron. He played a key role in facilitating the proposal for the G-Shock, accepting the challenge to produce a watch that broke traditional conventions of fragility. Throughout his career, Kashio emphasized a philosophy of simplicity in engineering, believing that the removal of unnecessary parts was the key to creating high-quality, affordable technology. His efforts in establishing a global manufacturing network remain a cornerstone of Casio’s operations today.
