The story of Kikuo Ibe
Kikuo Ibe is a Japanese engineer and the creator of the G-SHOCK, one of the most durable and best-selling watch lines in history. Born in 1952, Ibe earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Sophia University in 1976 before joining the Casio Computer Company. Initially assigned to the design department, he worked on digital watch construction during a period when the industry trend favored thin, elegant timepieces.
The inspiration for the G-SHOCK occurred in 1981 after Ibe accidentally dropped and shattered a mechanical watch that had been a precious gift from his father. This event led him to propose the development of a watch that could survive significant impact. To guide the project, he established the triple-ten requirement: the watch had to withstand a 10-meter drop, have 10 bars of water resistance, and possess a 10-year battery life.
The development process was marked by significant technical challenges. Working with a small group known as Project Team Tough, Ibe tested over 200 prototypes by dropping them from a third-story window at Casio‘s research center. The breakthrough came when Ibe observed a child playing with a rubber ball in a park; he realized that if the watch module were suspended or floated inside the case, it would be shielded from shock. This floating module concept became the foundation of G-SHOCK’s shock-resistant structure.
In 1983, Casio released the first G-SHOCK model, the DW-5000C. While initially marketed to construction workers and those in demanding environments, the brand gained global popularity for its rugged utility and eventually became a significant pop-culture icon. Under Ibe’s continued leadership in Research and Development, the line evolved to include premium materials such as the MR-G metal series and integrated modern technologies like solar power and GPS.
Today, Kikuo Ibe serves as a Chief Engineer at Casio and is widely recognized as the father of G-SHOCK. He travels globally as a brand ambassador, sharing his philosophy that toughness is defined by the ability to embrace and overcome failure. His legacy is defined by a commitment to engineering excellence that transformed the watch from a fragile instrument into a tool of extreme durability.
