The story of Nathan Trafford
Nathan Trafford is a British designer and entrepreneur recognized as the founder of Trafford Watch Co., an independent watch brand based in Austin, Texas. Originally from Northern England, Trafford transitioned into the horological industry after a professional career rooted in graphic design and marketing. His entry into watchmaking began as a creative outlet during the global pause of 2020, where he experimented with designing custom digital watch faces for the Facer smartwatch platform.
In 2020, Trafford officially established Trafford Watch Co. with a philosophy he termed “Take Your Time.” This approach emphasizes a slow-batch assembly process and encourages wearers to appreciate individual milestones. His first physical release, the S.O.E. Roadster, was a racing-inspired chronograph funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign. The collection paid homage to historical stories of 20th-century racing drivers who served as special operations agents during World War II, reflecting Trafford’s interest in using design as a storytelling medium.
Following the success of his debut, Trafford released the Crossroads collection, which marked a shift toward more structural and geometric design. This flagship series features a distinctive curved square case and dial colors inspired by the natural landscape of his adopted home in Texas, such as “Agave” and “Bluebonnet.” Trafford utilizes a digital-first design approach, leveraging a large online following to gather real-time feedback on technical and aesthetic details before moving models into production.
Under Trafford’s leadership, the brand has become known for blending British design sensibilities with “Modern Americana” themes. His work is characterized by a commitment to high-quality specifications, such as the use of Japanese Miyota automatic movements and sapphire crystal, while maintaining accessibility for enthusiasts. Today, Trafford remains the creative lead of the company, continuing to develop new collections that focus on character and personal narratives within the independent microbrand market.
