The story of Shogoro Yoshida
Shogoro Yoshida was a Japanese entrepreneur and watchmaker whose career laid the foundation for the Orient Watch Company, one of Japan’s most significant horological manufacturers. His journey in the industry began in 1901 when he opened the Yoshida Watch Shop in the Ueno district of Tokyo. Initially, his business operated as a wholesale shop specializing in the import and sale of pocket watches, a successful venture that established his presence in the emerging Japanese watch market.
As his business grew, Yoshida transitioned from retail to manufacturing. In 1912, he expanded his operations by producing gold wristwatch cases, and by 1920, he established Toyo Tokei Manufacturing. This new enterprise initially focused on the production of table clocks and gauges. It was not until 1934 that the company began manufacturing wristwatches, eventually operating out of a dedicated four-story factory in Hino, Tokyo, which opened in 1936.
The outbreak of World War II significantly disrupted Yoshida’s business as civilian manufacturing was repurposed for military equipment. Following the war, Toyo Tokei Manufacturing struggled with financial difficulties and a severe labor dispute, leading to its closure in 1949. Despite these setbacks, the manufacturing legacy Yoshida initiated was preserved by former employees who utilized the Hino factory to establish the Tama Keiki Company in 1950.
This new entity, which Shogoro Yoshida helped guide in its early stages, was renamed the Orient Watch Company in 1951. Under this new identity, the brand released the Orient Star, which became a cornerstone of its international reputation for precision and affordability. Yoshida’s original vision of bringing reliable timekeeping to a broad audience remained a guiding principle for the brand as it expanded globally throughout the mid-20th century.
Shogoro Yoshida is remembered as a pioneer of the Japanese watch industry. His ability to evolve from a small shop owner to an industrial manufacturer played a vital role in the development of mechanical watchmaking in Japan. Today, his legacy persists through the Orient brand, which continues to produce in-house mechanical movements and remains a prominent name in the global horological landscape.
