The story of Ryoichi Suzuki
Ryoichi Suzuki was a pivotal figure in the early development of the Japanese horological industry, recognized as one of the three foundational partners of the Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. His contributions were essential during the transition of the company from a research-oriented institute to a full-scale commercial manufacturer.
In 1930, Suzuki collaborated with Kamekichi Yamazaki, the founder of the Shokosha Watch Research Institute, and Yosaburo Nakajima to formally establish Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. This new enterprise was formed after Suzuki and Nakajima successfully bought out the Shokosha Watch Research Institute. Within the newly organized corporate structure, Suzuki assumed the critical role of the company’s first plant manager.
His leadership was centered on the technical and operational aspects of the manufacturing facility during a period of significant growth. Under his tenure as plant manager, the company launched its first wristwatch, the Model F, in 1931. This manual-wind timepiece marked a major milestone for the brand and remained in production for over two decades. Suzuki was also instrumental in overseeing the release of the company’s first women’s wristwatch, the Model K, in 1935.
Through his technical oversight and partnership with Yamazaki and Nakajima, Ryoichi Suzuki helped lay the industrial foundation for what would eventually become a global leader in the watchmaking world. His work at the original manufacturing plant ensured that the brand could fulfill its founding mission of producing high-quality, Japanese-made timepieces for the general public. Suzuki remains a respected figure in the history of Citizen, credited with turning an experimental workshop into a professionalized watch manufacture.
