The story of Jean-François Kerboul
Jean-François Kerboul is a French entrepreneur and co-founder of Akrone, an independent watchmaking house based in Nantes, France. Kerboul established the brand in 2015 alongside partners Erwan Kerneur and Jérémy Kerneur. The founders’ shared vision was to create high-quality, functional mechanical watches that combined technical precision with accessible pricing, often referred to as “tool-watches.” The name Akrone itself is a reference to the Greek word “akros” (peak) and the god of time, Chronos, while also serving as a nod to the founders’ surnames.
Under Kerboul’s leadership, Akrone gained significant momentum through successful crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter. The brand’s first model, the K-01, launched in September 2015, marking a milestone as one of the first French watch brands to utilize this model for growth. Since then, the company has developed several iconic collections, including the C-02 diving series, the C-03 aviation line, and the K-05 motor-inspired chronographs. A defining characteristic of the brand’s production is its commitment to French assembly and quality control, conducted within their Nantes workshop.
Kerboul has been instrumental in positioning Akrone as a trusted partner for specialized professional units. The brand has produced tailored timepieces for elite French forces, including the Marine Commandos, GIGN, the Foreign Legion, and the Army Light Aviation (ALAT). These collaborations emphasize the durability and reliability of the watches in extreme conditions. Additionally, Akrone achieved a world record in 2016 when a diver wore their K-02 model during a record-breaking cave dive to a depth of 267 meters.
Beyond the technical aspects of watchmaking, Kerboul and his team have integrated social responsibility into the brand’s identity. Akrone actively supports military mutual aid associations, such as Entraide Marine, donating significant funds to assist grieving families and war victims. As the brand approaches its tenth anniversary in 2025, Jean-François Kerboul remains a central figure in the revival of French horology, continuing to focus on innovation, the use of sustainable materials, and the integration of French-made movements like those from France Ébauches.
