Heinz Huber

Heinz Huber was a German entrepreneur and watchmaker whose professional legacy is defined by the establishment of the Circula watch brand in Pforzheim, Germany. Born into a family with a history in the watchmaking trade, Huber began his career in 1926 by establishing Huber & Co., a wholesale business specializing in jewelry and timepieces. Based in Pforzheim, a city historically recognized as a central hub for the German jewelry and horological industries, his early business focused on trading and distributing various brands.

Following the end of World War II, Huber played a central role in rebuilding the family enterprise within the heavily damaged city of Pforzheim. During the 1950s, a period of economic recovery and optimism in Germany, he sought to expand the company’s operations beyond wholesale trading. Leveraging his decades of experience in the watch trade, he transitioned into the design and manufacture of his own timepieces.

In 1955, Huber officially founded the Circula watch brand. The name was chosen to reflect the circular oscillation of the balance wheel, a critical component in mechanical watch movements. Under his leadership, the brand focused on producing high-quality mechanical watches that blended traditional craftsmanship with the industrial expertise of the Pforzheim region. The company initially thrived as both a manufacturer and a wholesaler, gaining a reputation for reliability and classic design.

During the “quartz crisis” of the 1970s, which significantly disrupted the traditional mechanical watch industry, Huber demonstrated professional adaptability by transitioning the brand’s production toward quartz technology. This strategic shift allowed the family business to remain viable during a period when many independent European watchmakers faced closure. In 1985, management of the company passed to his son, Klaus-Dieter Huber, who maintained the business’s focus on wholesale distribution.

Heinz Huber’s foundational work established a lineage that has lasted into the 21st century. The brand he created was revived in 2017 by his grandson, Cornelius Huber, who returned the company to its roots in mechanical watchmaking and direct-to-consumer sales. Today, Heinz Huber is remembered as the primary architect of Circula’s identity, having transformed a regional trading firm into an enduring family-owned watch manufacture that remains headquartered in Pforzheim.
