The story of Ariste Racine

Ariste Racine (1889–1958) was a prominent Swiss entrepreneur and watchmaker who founded the Enicar brand, a name that became synonymous with durability and innovation in 20th-century horology. Born into a family of artisans in the Jura region, Racine was part of a generational lineage with deep ties to the watchmaking industry, specifically in the town of Granges.

In October 1913, Racine and his wife, Emma Blatt, established their own manufacture, the “Manufacture d’Horlogerie Ariste Racine,” in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Because the family name “Racine” had already been trademarked by a relative for the American market, the couple sought a unique brand identity. Emma Blatt proposed a levidrome of their surname, reversing the letters to create “ENICAR.” Ariste Racine officially registered the brand name on January 6, 1914.

Initially operating from their home, the company quickly expanded under Racine’s leadership. In 1919, the business moved to a new factory in Lengnau, where it began producing watches under the Enicar name. Racine proved to be a brilliant salesman and an ingenious strategist, focusing on the production of high-quality, precision timepieces that remained affordable. During World War I, he successfully marketed innovative, readable pocket watches to European soldiers and railway crews.

Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Racine continued to grow the enterprise, bringing his brother Oskar into the company in 1918 and his son, Ariste Racine Jr., in 1934. The company transitioned into a joint-stock company, ENICAR SA, in 1932. Under Racine’s guidance, the brand established a reputation for technical excellence, eventually developing its own in-house movements and a high-end laboratory in Oensingen.

One of the defining aspects of Racine’s leadership was his focus on extreme reliability. This vision led to the creation of the famous “Sherpa” collection in the 1950s, which gained international acclaim after being used by Swiss mountaineers during successful expeditions to the summits of Mount Everest and Lhotse in 1956. The brand also became known for its “Ultrasonic” cleaning process and “Rubyrotor” movements, which emphasized mechanical precision.

Ariste Racine passed away in 1958, leaving behind a legacy of entrepreneurial spirit that transformed a small family workshop into one of Switzerland’s most significant watch manufactures of its era. His commitment to quality and clever branding ensured that Enicar remained a major global player in the horological market until the quartz crisis of the late 20th century.
