Atelier Wen is an independent watch brand that has established a unique position in the horological world by celebrating and elevating Chinese craftsmanship. Founded in 2018, the brand is the brainchild of Robin Tallendier and Wilfried Buiron, two French enthusiasts who developed a deep connection to Chinese culture and watchmaking while living and studying in China. Tallendier brought expertise from his time as an advisor to the China Horologe Association, while Buiron, fluent in Mandarin, contributed his experience as an entrepreneur in Beijing. Together, they sought to challenge global perceptions of “Made in China” products by showcasing the high level of artisanal skill present in the country’s traditional crafts.
The brand has gained a significant following among watch enthusiasts for its transparent and authentic approach to integrating Chinese heritage into modern timepiece design. Collectors are particularly drawn to the brand’s commitment to using traditional techniques that are rarely seen in accessible luxury watchmaking. This includes a dedication to sourcing components from the finest local artisans, such as master guillocheurs and enamelers, and utilizing movements from respected Chinese manufacturers like Dandong, which are often customized and highly decorated for the brand.
Atelier Wen’s catalog is defined by several key collections that highlight different facets of Chinese artistry. Their debut series, the Porcelain Odyssey, featured handmade porcelain dials, a nod to China’s historical “White Gold.” This was followed by the Perception, an integrated-bracelet sports watch that became a major success for the brand. The Perception is most notable for its handmade guilloche dials, created using a rose engine by Master Cheng Yucai, Asia’s only master guillocheur. More recently, the brand introduced the Inflection, an ambitious collection featuring a full-tantalum case and integrated bracelet—a world first for a non-limited production watch—paired with Grand Feu enamel dials crafted by the workshop of Master Kong Lingjun. These pieces exemplify the brand’s mission to merge innovative materials with ancestral Chinese craftsmanship.
