Robin Tallendier is a French entrepreneur and watch expert who is the co-founder of Atelier Wen, an independent watch brand that bridges French design with high-end Chinese craftsmanship. His path into horology began at the age of 14 when he received a Seiko chronograph, sparking a fascination with mechanical timepieces. This interest soon led him to discover the world of Chinese watchmaking, which he began to explore and collect while saving his pocket money as a teenager.
Tallendier’s academic and professional background is deeply rooted in both business and Chinese culture. He holds a Master’s degree from London Business School and completed portions of his studies at Warwick University and Peking University in Beijing. During his time in China, he became a student of Mr. Li Wei, a leading authority on Chinese horology. His professional experience includes roles at the French Chamber of Watchmaking in Shanghai and the jewelry and watch department at Christie’s in London. In 2016, his expertise was recognized when he was appointed as an execution expert and advisor to the China Horologe Association, a government-level organization overseeing the Chinese watch industry.
In 2018, Tallendier co-founded Atelier Wen alongside his long-time friend Wilfried Buiron. The brand was established with the mission of challenging Western perceptions of “Made in China” by showcasing the country’s capacity for fine watchmaking and traditional artistry. Under Tallendier’s creative vision, the brand has released notable collections such as the Porcelain Odyssey, which featured kiln-fired porcelain dials, and the Perception series, known for its hand-turned guilloche dials created by Master Cheng Yucai.
Based between France and Asia, Tallendier continues to lead Atelier Wen by focusing on transparency and the integration of rare Chinese crafts, such as enamel and specialized metalwork, into contemporary watch design. His work is characterized by a commitment to elevating Chinese horological heritage to a global stage, positioning it alongside traditional European luxury standards.
