About this watch

The Seiko Presage SPB167 was the first model in the Sharp Edged Series, launched in September 2020. Its round stainless steel case has Seiko’s super-hard coating and measures 39.3 mm in diameter, 11.1 mm in thickness and 47.2 mm from lug to lug, with a 20 mm lug width. The deep blue “Aitetsu” (indigo iron) dial is stamped with a three-dimensional pattern based on the traditional Japanese asanoha, or hemp leaf, motif. Its hands and indexes are filled with LumiBrite, and it is protected by a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface. The watch is powered by Seiko’s caliber 6R35, an automatic movement with manual winding, 24 jewels and a power reserve of about 70 hours. Seiko rates its accuracy at +25 to -15 seconds per day. Water resistance is 10 bar, or 100 meters.

The SPB167 shows hours, minutes and central seconds with a stop-seconds function, plus a date window at 3 o’clock. The screw-down caseback has a sapphire window that shows the movement. It comes on an integrated three-link stainless steel bracelet with a three-fold clasp and push-button release, and the watch weighs 155 g. Sister models in the same case include the white Shironeri SPB165 and the green Tokiwa SPB169, and later releases added more traditional Japanese colors. Seiko USA last listed the SPB167 at USD 1,000, and the series launched at EUR 990 in Europe.

Reviewers liked the Sharp Edged Series as a sporty dress watch with more character than the standard Presage. Monochrome described the case as “crisper, sharper and more angular,” praised the hemp-leaf dial for how it plays with light, and called the series “exceptional value for money,” noting that sapphire on both sides raises the quality level. The main criticism is the 6R35 movement, which is reliable but plainly finished, and its accuracy tolerance is wide for the price. Seiko has removed the SPB167 from its official websites, so it appears to be discontinued and is now sold from remaining dealer stock or on the pre-owned market.
