About this watch

The Seiko 5 Sports SSK005 is a 42.5 mm GMT watch from the 5 Sports SKX series. Its stainless steel case is 13.6 mm thick, with a 46.0 mm lug-to-lug length and a 22 mm lug width, and its shape is drawn from the Seiko SKX, one of the brand’s best-loved sports watches. The orange dial has LumiBrite on the hands and indexes, a black GMT hand for contrast, and a date window under a Hardlex crystal with a magnifier. It is powered by Seiko’s caliber 4R34, a 24-jewel automatic movement that can also be wound by hand and has a stop-seconds function. The 4R34 provides a power reserve of about 41 hours. Water resistance is rated at 10 bar (100 meters), and magnetic resistance at 4,800 A/m.

The watch shows hours, minutes and seconds, the date, and a second time zone on a 24-hour hand. The 24-hour hand is set independently of local time, so it works as a “caller” GMT for tracking home or a colleague’s time zone. A rotating 24-hour bezel in two colors separates the day and night hours, and its ring indicator is made of Seiko’s Hardlex glass. The five-row bracelet was designed for this series and is inspired by the original SKX, with polished middle rows. It closes with a three-fold clasp with push-button release and secure lock. The see-through screw caseback shows the movement. Seiko offers the same watch with black and blue dials, and lists the SSK005 at USD 495 in the United States.

Reviewers see the SSK as one of the most accessible ways into mechanical GMT watches, a category that has historically been expensive. aBlogtoWatch found that the 42.5 mm case wears far smaller than its numbers suggest, thanks to its rounded, undercut case sides, and called it an affordable entry into GMTs. The trade-offs are the ones that keep the price down: a Hardlex crystal instead of sapphire, a 41-hour power reserve and a caller rather than a “true” traveler GMT movement. Some owners also wish the clasp felt more solid for the price. The SSK005 is currently in production and listed on Seiko’s official US site.
