The Seiko 5 Sports SRPE53 is a 40 mm automatic watch from the Seiko 5 Sports SKX series, known among collectors as the “DressKX” because it drops the rotating dive bezel of the original SKX design. Its stainless steel case is 11.5 mm thick and 44.6 mm from lug to lug, with a 20 mm lug width. A Hardlex crystal covers the blue dial, and LumiBrite is applied to the hands and indexes. It is powered by Seiko’s Caliber 4R36, an automatic movement with 24 jewels that can also be wound by hand, with a power reserve of about 41 hours. Water resistance is rated at 10 bar (100 meters), and magnetic resistance at 4,800 A/m.
The watch shows hours, minutes and seconds, with a stop-seconds function and a day-date display at 3 o’clock. The case has a see-through, screw-down caseback. It comes on a stainless steel bracelet with a three-fold clasp with push-button release and secure lock, and weighs 142 g. Seiko lists the SRPE53 at EUR 350 on its official European site.
Reviewers regard the “DressKX” models as some of the most versatile affordable automatics around: the bezel-less case keeps the SKX’s proportions but looks cleaner and dressier, and the 40 mm size wears well on most wrists. The main compromises are the Hardlex crystal instead of sapphire and the basic accuracy and power reserve of the 4R36 movement. The SRPE53 is currently in production and listed in Seiko’s official 5 Sports collection.
