The Rolex Yacht-Master reference 16628, introduced in 1992, is the 40 mm 18 kt yellow gold version of the first Yacht-Master. Dealer listings describe a bi-directional rotating bezel, a sapphire crystal, a screw-down crown, a date window and the automatic calibre 3135, on an 18 kt gold Oyster bracelet with a folding clasp. The dial was offered in white with onyx markers, and in blue, champagne and mother-of-pearl; I could not confirm a 100 metre water resistance figure from the listings, and dates for case variants conflict between sources.
The Yacht-Master was Rolex’s sailing watch, a luxury sports model between the Submariner and the Day-Date. The first references appeared in the early 1990s in gold only, and a steel and platinum version, the 16622, followed later in the decade.
Collectors see the 16628 as an underrated Rolex, with a distinct gold sport-watch look. It is no longer in production, as the 116628 replaced it.
