The LIP Mach 2000 was designed by the French industrial designer Roger Tallon, who is better known for the TGV high-speed train. It has an angular, space-age case with a ball-shaped crown, and the line included chronograph versions powered by the Valjoux 7743 as well as simpler models. Sources date its launch between 1973 and 1975, and the exact specifications changed between versions, so figures should be read as indicative.
LIP, the Besançon maker, turned to outside designers in the 1970s to rescue its image, and the Mach 2000 is the best known result. Tallon applied industrial design thinking, with clean volumes and function-led forms, to a watch at a moment when LIP was in financial trouble; the company went through its well-known labour crisis in 1973.
Collectors value it as one of the most original French watches of the decade and a design icon, and it is still relatively affordable. The original Mach 2000 is no longer produced, though LIP has reissued it in recent years.
