About this watch

The IWC Portugieser Chronograph reference 3714, launched in 1998, is a 41 mm steel automatic chronograph with an applied Arabic-numeral dial, blued leaf hands and a railway-style minute track. It runs the calibre 79350, a modified Valjoux 7750, with two subdials for running seconds and the 30-minute counter. It is on a leather strap and has a sapphire crystal and a water resistance of 30 metres.

The 3714 was based on the dial and proportions of IWC’s 1930s Portuguese watches, which had been built for Portuguese merchants with a large precision movement. It brought the Portugieser name back as a modern dress chronograph and was produced in steel and in gold.

The community regards the 3714 as a classic and well-proportioned chronograph, with a dial that has been much copied, and IWC reissued the design in later generations. The 3714 itself has been replaced, and the Portugieser Chronograph remains in IWC’s collection.
